Funding for community carbon schemes

20/09/2009

The UK government is offering £10 million to communities around the country that have the best low carbon initiatives.

Entitled the Low Carbon Communities Challenge, regions are being urged to apply for part of the funding to build on existing projects.

There will be 20 communities chosen for the financial injection, with the measures taken being chosen by members of the public.

In addition, local people will be encouraged to get involved in energy efficiency initiatives and contribute to attempts to decrease community carbon footprints.

Ed Miliband, the energy and climate change secretary, said: "We're searching for communities across the country to kick start the low carbon revolution.

"The challenge is an opportunity for communities to lead the way so that everyone can play their part in tacking climate change and save money on fuel bills. The UK has the most ambitious emissions reduction commitments in the world and projects like this will develop the policies we need to be successful."

WRAP, the Energy Saving Trust and the Carbon Trust will all be included in specialist government support teams for the scheme.
